Research on the Link Between Ginkgo and Prevention of Dementia Finds No Benefit

A study just published by the Journal of the American Medical Association found that there is no benefit to using Ginkgo biloba in order to reduce the risk of developing dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

DR. Steven T. DeKosky led the study over an period of 8 years and at four clincial sites. He had over 3000 people (age 75 or older) participate. The trial was known as the Ginkgo Evaluation of Memory (GEM) and was the largest clinical trial done evaluating the effects of using this dietary supliment.

The National Institute of Health as well as four other agenices funded the study. Dr, Richard Hodes, M.D., director of the National Institute of Aging comments, “it is disappointing that the dietary supplement tested in this study had no effect in preventing Alzheimer’s disease.”
